Tips to Improve Your Fuel Efficiency

Probably one of the most common questions about a vehicle is: How do I improve my car’s fuel efficiency?  And it’s quite an important question too.  Every driver wants to save money at the pump and have their vehicle run efficiently and smoothly.  So, here are some tips to help improve your fuel efficiency.

Keep Your Vehicle in Good Condition

They always say to keep your vehicle clean, but it really does make a difference.  If you don’t properly clean your car from snow and salt it can cause damage, and that damage will affect your fuel efficiency.  Plus, as snow, dirt or mud attaches to your car, it adds weight and can increase wind resistance.

Watch Your Driving Habits

Do you brake hard?  Or use a lot of throttle?  Well, that isn’t good for your fuel efficiency since it doesn’t conserve fuel.  It’s actually better to apply light throttle and avoid heavy braking as you drive.  And using cruise control on the highway while driving long distances can also help reduce fuel consumption.

Don’t Have Long Idling Times

You should let your vehicle idle for a long time.  In fact, contrary to what many believe, letting your car idle to have it “warm up” can be harmful to your car.  Plus, idling will still use up your gas, wasting the gas you bought.

Keep a Low Load Weight

The more weight that is in your vehicle means the more work your vehicle will have to do to maintain and reach a speed.  So, if you don’t need that pile of bricks in your trunk, we suggest that you get rid of them.

Keep Up with Regular Maintenance

Now, this is something that you should do in general.  The best way to know how to maintain your vehicle following what your informational display says; for example, if your oil warning light is on, you should get an oil change.  Also, you should always use the recommended viscosity engine oil, your mechanic should know which oil you require.  And your vehicle manual will have suggested time periods between your scheduled maintenances.

Maintain Recommended Tire Pressure

If your tires are under-inflated, you will actually use more fuel while driving.  Plus, driving with under-inflated tires for long periods of time can increase the chances of your vehicle becoming misaligned or damaged.  So, it’s best to maintain the recommended tire pressure, which is indicated on the tires themselves.
