2018 Honda Odyssey Car Seats

Built with advanced engineering techniques and quality technologies, many drivers choose the Honda Odyssey as their family vehicle for its strong sense of safety.  Plus, there are many available driver-assistive and convenience features that make it ideal for a family.  But for a family with young children, how do you install a car seat in the 2018 Honda Odyssey?

The biggest advantage is the available 8th seat, that way there are 3 seats in the middle.  But even if you don’t have that 8th seat, there is the Magic Slide 2nd-Row Seats™.  This lets you “slide” one of the 2nd-row seats to be in the middle, making it easier to reach from the front row and allow better access to the 3rd-row.  And to make installing a car seat easier, the 2nd-row seats all are equipped with Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren (LATCH), and the 3rd-row has Tether Anchors at all seats and Lower Anchors on the outboard seat.

How to Install a Rear-Facing Car Seat

Now children from birth until age 2 (or until they reach the upper weight limit of the car seat) should be in a rear-facing car seat.  You should also consult both the Honda Odyssey manual and the car seat manual as you install the seat.  Car seat experts recommend that you place the car seat in the center, but sometimes that is not available because of limited LATCH connections (good thing the Odyssey is fully equipped).

  • Place the car seat where it gets the tightest fit, so that the seat should move less than an inch side-to-side or front-to-back
  • Use either the Lower Anchors or the seat belt, not both
    • If you use the seat belt, be sure to have the belt lock into position
  • Be sure to properly secure your child into the seat before you start your vehicle

How to Install a Front-Facing Car Seat

Don’t switch your child to a front-facing car seat until they have reached the upper weight or height limit of the rear-facing seat.  Your child can stay in a front-facing seat until they reach that seat’s weight or height restrictions.

  • Always use the top Tether Anchor, use the manual to find the correct tether spot for the vehicle seat
  • Be sure to properly secure your child into the seat before you start your vehicle

How to Install a Booster Seat

When you child turns 5 and has reached the weight and height restrictions of the car seat, you should use a belt-positioned booster seat until they reach 4-feet 9-inches.

  • Be sure to pick a booster seat that fits your child comfortably and safely
  • Keep it buckled even when your child is not in it, that way it stays secure
  • The seat belt should sit on the child like it would an adult—across the collarbone and breastbone and over the pelvis
