Is it normal to feel some light vibration in my Honda while using cruise control?

As vehicle owners, any noise, vibration, sound or smell can raise some red flags of concern. So if you’re cruising along on the highway and you feel some slight vibration, you might wonder whether or not it’s normal. If you’re the owner a Honda with a V-6 engine, you can likely rest easy if this is something you’ve experienced.

One of the great technologies present in several Honda models is called Variable Cylinder Management, and although this feature will help you save on fuel, it can occasionally result in slight, temporary vibration.

What is Variable Cylinder Management (VCM)?

VCM is a great technology present in many V-6 Honda models designed to help you save on fuel without sacrificing any of that V-6 power. The premise is simple — when all six cylinders are needed while accelerating, going uphill or driving through the city, your Honda will use all six to provide the most power possible.

At light cruising speeds however, the VCM system can deactivate two or three of those cylinders to help you save on fuel when less power is required. With just three or four cylinders activated, less fuel will be consumed, thus saving you money.

Next-generation Honda Odyssey poised to simplify family travel

Whether you’re a parent or not, you probably have a pretty good picture of what family travel can look like at its worst. Spilled drinks, name calling, are-we-there-yets, and frequent restroom stops only begin the list of challenges that can occur on a lengthy family trip. While no vehicle can completely eliminate the stresses of family travel, the 2018 Honda Odyssey has a number of new technologies that will keep everyone content.

How does VCM create vibration?

When cylinders are deactivated, they no longer generate power, which creates an imbalance in the engine that can cause vibration. Honda uses several electronically controlled engine mounts to counteract the engine vibration so you don’t feel it. With that said, some owners are more in tune to those light vibrations and may feel very mild effects of VCM, particularly at low cruising speeds when only 3 or 4 cylinders are active.
