Prepping your vehicle for the cold

Prepping your vehicle for the cold

The warm months have left and the cold weather is starting to set in, is your vehicle ready?  Unlike when it’s warm out, there are many possible problems that the cold can cause to a vehicle, that’s why prepping your vehicle for the cold is necessary.

View our Honda Service CouponsSome of the problems that can happen without proper care for your vehicle during the cold could be:

  • Tire problems – cold weather naturally lowers tire pressure and that can harm your tires and cause issues while driving
  • Frozen gas line – the cold can affect how the gas travels to the engine
  • Engine troubles – just driving with an engine that hasn’t warmed up can cause lots of problems
  • Exterior damage from salt – the salt and sand mixture snowplows leave to melt ice can start to damage and rust your vehicle
  • Fluid thickening – just like with the gas line, engine fluids can thicken and cause engine problems since the fluids won’t move well in the engine
  • Battery troubles – cold weather will drain a battery faster since it pulls the voltage away

Tips to Prep Your Vehicle

  • Check your battery, fluid levels, brakes and tire pressure
  • Make sure your tires have an adequate amount of tread (buy winter tires if needed)
  • Double check your vehicle’s lights (headlights, taillights, high beams, hazards)
  • Check your windshield-washer system – wipers and washer fluid (buy winter wipers if needed)
  • Double check that your roadside kit has enough and the correct supplies (get a roadside kit if you don’t have one)
    • Blanket(s), flashlight, jumper cables, tire changing tools, extra gloves (and hats), etc.
    • Add a shovel in case your vehicle gets stuck in the snow or slush (kitty litter or sand can help as well)
    • Ice scraper
  • Clean off salt/sand every once in a while– a car wash and wax can help prevent corrosion
  • Add in HEET or another type of gas line antifreeze as the weather starts to get cold and again after a couple of months if the weather is still extremely cold
  • If able, try to park car in a garage, it will prolong battery life, protect from the weather, prevent the vehicle from freezing and make it easier to start since it won’t be as cold

Hopefully these tips can help you maintain your vehicle as the cold months set in.  If you need to bring your vehicle in to have it check or serviced for the cold, contact us at Indy Honda and our knowledgeable service staff will gladly assist you.  You are also able to order any parts that your vehicle may need online.

  1. Nice post. I learn one thing more challenging on totally different blogs everyday. It would always be stimulating to read content material from different writers and apply a bit something from their store. I’d want to use some with the content on my weblog whether you don’t mind. Natually I’ll give you a link in your web blog. Thanks for sharing.
