Tips on Washing Salt Off Your Car

After a long and arduous winter, spring is finally coming up on the horizon.  And when it finally arrives, we will see the weather becoming much more pleasant as well.  With this warmer weather, it is important to remember to wash your car thoroughly so that none of the winter dirt or salt causes damage.  That’s why we have some tips on washing salt off your car.

While using salt on the road helps ensure us that we can drive safely and have traction during winter, it can be highly corrosive when it has repeated and long exposure to vehicles.  In fact, the most common problem it can cause is rust, and rust can cause many other problems for your car.  And the biggest area to worry about is the underbody of the car since it is wide open for dirt, debris, sand and salt to stick there.  This is also hard to detect since you can’t easily see underneath your car.

Some of the other areas that commonly start to corrode and rot from salt exposure are the exhaust and muffler system, coil springs, hydraulic brake system and the frame of the car itself.  Plus, it can also start to eat through your car’s paint after a while.

Many drivers don’t think to get a car wash during winter because of how cold it is and the possibility of the doors and hinges freezing.  However, even during the winter months, you should still try to regularly have your car washed, especially the underbody.  There are many car washes that offer underbody sprays, or you can visit a coin-operated car wash and use the pressure washers and soap to clean it yourself.  Either way, once you’re done, all you need to do is dry off the door jams and joints of your vehicle, this way there won’t be any water for it to freeze shut.

And as the days start to become warmer, you can even spend a weekend afternoon thoroughly washing your car in your driveway.  Some people even use garden hoses and sprinklers to move underneath their cars to wash off salt and dirt.

Then, to help protect your car next winter, we recommend that you try some of these tips:

  • Wax your car before winter, while the underbody is the most at risk, having a good coat of wax can help protect the rest of your vehicle.
  • Avoid puddles, since road salt is used to chemically melt ice, puddles will have a large amount of salt in.
  • Pretreat your undercarriage.  Spraying the exposed parts with an oil solution can help prevent salt and water from sticking to the metal.  Contact us for more details.
  • Wash your car immediately after a snow storm!  You’ll want to get the salt off of your car as soon as possible.
  • Remember to use an under-spray when you wash your car so that your car’s underbody stays clean.
  • Schedule a pre-winter inspection where a mechanic can go over your vehicle so that your vehicle is in tip-top shape for winter.  Having a mechanic look at it also means that any wear and tear can be addressed before the weather becomes cold.
