Honda Vehicle Maintenance

Is your Honda making loud or strange noises when you idle or drive?  Well something may be in need of service then.  But what can cause these noises?

There are a number of things that can happen with your vehicle that can cause it to make odd noises.  Some of these issues are more serious than others and could possibly mean that your vehicle is about to kick the bucket.  Here are some common car problems that can cause weird noises:

mechanic and driver looking at engine

Squealing, squeaking, scraping or grinding noise while braking.

This may be the most common issue when it comes to cars brakes (brake rotors, pads, shoes) needing to be adjusted, cleaned or replaced.  Sometimes the noise could be a clunking sound that happens while braking, this usually indicates that something is wrong with a brake caliper.

Hissing or sizzling sound coming from under the hood.

If you hear this when you first shut off the engine, then it means that something is leaking onto a heated engine part, such as coolant or oil.  It could also be that a vacuum line is leaking or that the engine is overheating.

Loud roaring sounds that increase while accelerating.

This is most likely caused by damage to the exhaust system.  However, it could also be transmission issues like if the clutch is slipping or that it’s not advancing to the next gear.  If you hear a rattling from below the vehicle is could also mean that something is wrong with the exhaust system, like if it’s loose (though it could also be loose brake pads).

This usually means that a belt or belts are loose and slipping or that an accessory’s drive pulley as become misaligned.

Pinging or knocking noises from your engine.

Most likely caused by an ignition problem, such as a bad fuel filter, fuel injector, distributor cap or damaged spark plugs.

Loud noises while idling.

This could be simple wear and tear that happens over time.  It could be caused by a valve being stuck, low engine oil, low oil pressure or that the engine is overheating.

Thank you for explaining that a clunking sound when braking might be caused by a problem with the brake caliper. This has been happening to my Subaru Impreza whenever I brake slowly going down a hill. Now I know what the problem is, I can find an auto shop that can fix it. Thanks again!
